Wat Analayo
 |
A reader wrote in to recommend the temple on the opposite side of the lake from
Phayao. The temple was constructed 12 years ago at the top of a hill for a much
-revered abbot, who is visited annually by the king. The grounds are filled with
religious statuary, including Buddha images from various Thai eras, and
representations of Hindu gods such as Vishnu and Shiva. A small viham at the
summit holds silver and gold Buddhas presented by the king and decorated with
diamonds and emeralds. Four soldiers armed with M-16 rifles guard the viham,
which also contains a large elephant encrusted with Ceylonese gems; the elephant
was donated by the Sri Lankan government.
Analayo can be reached by songtao or a motorcycle rented in Phayao. |
